Why Has My Doctor Prescribed an MRI Test?
This is a highly accurate diagnostic method, which your health care professional chose. A neck MRI might be ordered for a variety of reasons, such as:
Herniated or Bulging Discs: If the cushioning discs between your vertebrae have expanded or bulged in an uncomfortable manner and have come in contact with sensitive nerves, pressing painfully, it can be determined accurately.
Spinal Stenosis: Assess for a potentially serious spinal canal narrowing which may affect the largest spinal cord and thereby limit motion.
Trauma and Whiplash: To thoroughly evaluate the effects of the soft tissues and ligaments after a car accident, fall or high impact sport injury.
Pinched or Trapped Nerves: To easily identify which nerves may be trapped or pinched causing tingling sensations in the arms and fingers - this is known as Radiculopathy.
Abnormal Growths: To provide detailed plans for the location of cervical spine cysts, localized infections or tumors before they potentially become very damaging.
What should I expect on the day of MRI scanning?
Safety First: All metal objects (phones, keys, jewellery), etc. will be removed and placed in a magnetic area and a metal free clinic gown will be used.
The Scan: You will lie down on a foam table which slides into a scanner where the scanner will shine. All you have to do is relax and go very still.
The Environment: A rhythmic thumping and whirring sound is heard. Don't be concerned, this is just normal for the patient. The clinic will have ear plugs/music systems for your accompaniment to make you comfortable. This will be about 30-45 minutes.
How Does Technology Work in MRI Scans?
If you wish to reap the advantages of this machine, it is advisable to have a general idea of what makes this machine special. Unlike the older imaging techniques, an MRI won't emit dangerous radiation into your body. Instead it does this with an extraordinarily strong, not harmful magnetic field and with special radio waves. Together with the water molecules that are naturally present in the body, a computer takes the signals and creates amazing and far more detailed digital cross-sections of your body.
